5 Ways to Expand the Clinical Dialogue in Therapy and Supervision

Credits:

• 6 Hours of Continuing Education Units for California LMFTs, LCSWs and LPCCs

This course meets the BBS requirements for 6 CEU hours of Supervision training mandated with each 2 year license renewal for supervisors of MFT trainees and associates, PCC associates, and Associate Social Workers. Itmay be applied to the 15 hour  BBS supervision training requirement for new supervisors of AMFTs and trainees,  Associate Social Workers (ASWs) and APCCs.

Who should take this course:

• LMFTs, LCSWs or LPCCs who are supervising graduate students, qualified Associates pursuing supervision in agency or private practice settings or those supervising agency staff
• LMFTs, LCSWs or LPCCs who are new supervisors
• LMFTs, LCSWs or LPCCs who are consultants
• Potential supervisors
• LMFTs, LCSWs or LPCCs accruing the 36 CEUs required by the BBS every license renewal period who want to expand their own psychotherapy skills
• LMFTs, LCSWs or LPCCs who receive supervision or consultation
• This course meets the qualifications for 6 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs and LPCCs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.

Course Description:

This course provides a user-friendly guide to 5 complex topics in therapy and supervision: empathy, clinical dimensions, attachment style, selfobject transferences and parallel process. Each topic is defined; then techniques to teach and apply these concepts to therapy and supervision are demonstrated through clinical material and case examples.

Supervision requires us to articulate how we work so that we can teach, mentor and guide new members of the profession. We may know how to “do it” but sharing our accumulated knowledge and therapy experience is a challenging task. This course is designed to assist the therapist and the supervisor in the practical application of these five complex subjects in order to enrich and expand the clinical dialogue.

Part IV: Self Psychology’s Basic Selfobject Transferences

1. • Mirroring selfobject transference – Therapist’s use of self-primitive, basic & expanded mirroring selfobject functions with case example
   • Idealizing selfobject transference – Therapist’s use of self-primitive, basic & expanded idealizing functions with case example
   • Twinship/Alterego selfobject transference – Therapist’s use of self-primitive, basic & expanded twinship/alterego functions with case example
   • Selfobject transferences in supervision – Supervision case example
